SPECTRUM
HEALTH
MOLECULAR BIOLOGY AND FLOW CYTOMETRY LAB ALTERATIONS
COOPERS LANDING
GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN
While
still a member of Landmark Design Group,
P.C., Ted Lott, AIA designed and managed the construction of this
multi-use lab facility in downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan. Working
with the user groups, the Spectrum Health Facilities Department
and interior design collaborator Jomar Associates, Ted Lott led
the design team through a design/construct/move process that spanned
only four months. At the outset the cultural and operational differences
of the two, formerly independent, labs became a serious design consideration.
The Molecular Biology lab with its complicated processes and their
varied and heavy equipment needs demanded a series of compartmentalized
rooms each devoted to a specific function. In contrast, the Flow
Cytometry lab has a much more open work flow which resulted in an
single open work space. The two labs come together along a common
circulation and administrative space. Common ceiling forms and colors
were used to unify the spaces across lab functions and color keying
was used to identify the unique spaces within each lab. The project
was completed and the labs were moved on time and on budget of approximately
$600,000.
